Fall Frostbiting
Saturday November 8, 2003 Results
Now we know why it is called "Frostbiting". With the temperatures in the 30's and the snow falling, it was questionable as to whether we would/should sail or not. However, after six boats showed up, the decision was made to sail. Even our Fleet Captain, Pete Madison, made an appearance, though he chose not to sail. So the boats were rigged and people dressed, with many layers, and we headed out to the race course. Unfortunately, after all that, the wind was not cooperating. So Augi, who was RC and had already been out to set the course, came back and towed the six boats to the starting area where we bobbed for a short time and decided there was not enough wind to sail. Augi picked up the marks and just as he started to gather the boats to tow everyone back in, the wind had a change of heart and filled in from the SE at about 12 knts. Augi again set up the course and finally we were racing.
Just before the start of the first race, Derrick thought it might be warmer in the water, so he flipped the boat and went for a swim. Carolyn convinced him they should race, so they righted the boat with just enough time to start. For the start of the second race, Derrick decided the tiller extension was always in his way, so he took it off. Carolyn again convinced him he needed it and it was replaced before the start. Boats trickled in after each race and after three races the remaining sailors decided "that was enough" and everyone headed in for the hot chillimac they new awaited them. Once inside the hot food, courtesy of Carolyn (CC) and Derrick (DD), and cold beer was much appreciated. Pete and Dina came down with cupcakes to celebrate Pete's birthday and Lee saved the day by getting forks. Despite the cold everyone had a good time as the socializing went on until the late afternoon.
Next weekend should be warmer and Lee has promised to bring food worth coming down for, so I hope to see everyone then. And if you want to know what CC and DD means you should show up next weekend to find out. Sue O'Neil
